West Michigan's music scene
After an unprecedented, unsatisfying 2020 for live music due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the summer of 2021 shaped up as a huge first step in returning to the outdoor celebrations that Michigan music lovers have come to expect, experience and extol.
Indoor shows returned, too.
While some tours and music festivals canceled for the second year due to uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and capacity restrictions, many festivals and popular summer gatherings revved up with gusto, including Hoxeyville Music Festival, Breakaway Music Festival, Livelylands Music Festival and new events such as Upheaval Music Festival, Smiling Acres Music Festival and a three-night stand by Greensky Bluegrass at Shagbark Farm.
Of course, outdoor concerts of all shapes and sizes were back, too, as evidenced by Local Spins’ “Free Outdoor Commmunity Concerts” and “Summer Concert Series @ Venues” listing, featuring hundreds of free shows across the region.
But as Memorial Day weekend wound down, much of festival and concert organizers’ confidence in moving forward was directly related to rollout of COVID vaccines across Michigan as well as case numbers in different areas of the state.
