Grand Valley State University got an Electric Forest-y taste of electronic dance music Thursday night.

The university’s Homecoming Concert starring California electro-house DJ Steve Aoki drew a near-capacity crowd, packing the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on the Allendale campus with sweaty dancers, many donning their best rave gear – from one attendee’s Pokémon-themed outfit to furry legwarmers and pacifiers to attire designed to catch the flashing strobe lights and multi-colored beams.
Many accessorized with blue glow sticks, courtesy of Spotlight Productions, the concert’s sponsor.
Opener Autoerotique, an electro-producer from Toronto, had some in the crowd dancing from the get-go while others relaxed on the bleachers. Of course, Aoki drew a roar when he finally took the stage, his signature long hair and goatee immediately recognizable.
He then proceeded to unleash a high-energy show, complete with confetti shooting from the stage and the obligatory light show (as well as Aoki’s trademark cake throw), which kept audience members moving. Conducting the crowd as they jumped around, Aoki kept the music frenetic while the symbol for his record label, Dim Mak Records, flashed on the screen behind him, a screen which continuously flashed trippy images.
The evening led by this rising EDM star was captured in photos for Local Spins by Anthony Norkus.
