The launch of a new concert venue takes a lot of blood, sweat, tears, extensive planning and the support of a community’s music lovers.
It all paid off for Muskegon’s new Starlight Room, which staged a soft opening party on Friday and the first official concert on Saturday — a sold-out affair starring the up-and-coming Grand Haven band Fire in the Attic.
“What an exceptionally fantastic venue,” attendee Blair Elizabeth Butterworth-Butler wrote on Facebook. “I look forward to being here more often and allowing my ears and mind to absorb its greatness.”
Added Steve Boersma: “Definitely a highlight for me. Amazing event and venue.”
Suffice to say, organizers and owners of the revamped space at 4765 Airline Highway that’s now a state-of-the-art listening room with a capacity of 100 to 205 concertgoers that offers live recording services were awed by the opening weekend.
“Did we dream this or is this really our new space? Our sold-out show with Fire in the Attic is the stuff dreams are made of,” they posted on Facebook. “Everything checked out and we are heading for orbit now. All systems are go.”
Next up: Asamu Johnson & The Associates of the Blues play The Starlight Room on June 10. Tickets, $25-$35, available at starlightroom.net. Read more about the Starlight Room here.
The debut of Starlight Room was just part of West Michigan’s music weekend, with Local Spins Fest unleashing six bands on Saturday at Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids, celebrating Local Spins’ 11th anniversary and the kickoff to summer music. The weekend also featured a special blues show at Kalamazoo’s Rugger’s Up and Under featuring legendary Michigan guitarist Larry McCray and Kalamazoo’s Out of Favor Boys, the return of Desmond Jones to Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe (with Jordan Hamilton opening) and country singer Larry Fleet, along with Drew Parker, at Kalamazoo State Theatre.
