THE READER RESPONSES:
Steve Middendorp – Backstreet Boys. I watched TRL on MTV after school when they were all over the countdown along with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Not long after, I got into Third Eye Blind and went into alternative and heavy rock and also classic rock.
Kevin Murphy – The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson in any configuration. Seen both bands more times than I can remember.
Roger Kintner – I don’t know why, I enjoy Cher. Especially “Believe and “If I could turn back time”
Stacy Noonan – The Carpenters.
DeAnna Owen Harvey – John Denver ‘Country Road’ and Randy Travis ‘3 Crosses,’ Jonny Lang ‘Lie to Me.’ Endless list.
Kate Meinel Kirchner – Rod Stewart. ‘OOh, La La’
Rich Emerson – Supertramp. Still on my playlist…
Ed Atanasoff – The Marshall Tucker Band, and not shy at all about admitting it. Toy Caldwell’s thumb should have been bronzed.
Steve Sly -Nothing guilty about MTB. They were one of the great Southern Rock bands of their era IMO.
Vicki Stein – Indigo Girls. Not guilty at all.
Laura A. Dillivan – Gotta admit it was Barry Manilow. And NOW I have to admit that my husband just this past weekend scored 3 of his albums on vinyl for $1.00 each and brought them home to me (kinda like a cat bringing in a dead mouse, sweet but kinda “Ewww”).
Steve Sly – First thing that comes to mind Jimmy Buffett. Yes, he is best known for his novelty hits, but if you dive into his catalogue he has written a lot really good songs. Jimmy is completely different from pretty much any other music in my collection, but I have always liked him.
Elle Lutz – Amy Grant ( especially the CCM from the 1980’s) As a girl who grew up singing on church stages, Grant’s music was a very big part of my life. Ahhhh.. I am embarrassed to admit that but I still enjoy her music.
Elle Lively – Elle Lutz: I can actually totally relate to this for the same reasons. She’s still a power icon in the Nashville scene.
Eric Mj Ellis – Does Ryan Adams count? I’m nostalgic for the days of just thinking he was a jerk instead of a jerk who’s habitually done shitty things to girls/women.
John Harvey – Bob Dylan. My roommate in east Lansing was obsessed with him and his music. Taught himself to play the guitar and harmonica. We’d buy a matchbox stuffed full of weed and groove to those one in a lifetime lyrics.
Alex Austin – Might be mid 2000s pop rock for me. I like the Fray, All-American Rejects and early (first 2 albums) Maroon 5. I also have a soft spot for Phil Collins-led Genesis and his solo career.
Michael Pierce – Anything the roller rink DJs played when I was in middle school: Cry For You by September, Every Time We Touch, Sandstorm, Lil Jon… All good stuff to glide to.
Brian Ferriby – I love me some Carpenters. Her voice, the arrangements, and the stellar studio work of Hal Blaine and the Wrecking Crew. I don’t care if it’s cheesy. It’s the good kind of cheese, like warm Brie.
Lee Chase – Tommy James (and the Shondells) and Lou Christie both put out some great stuff. It’s a non-guilty pleasure to hear their music today. Oops forgot Blues Magoos and SRC!
Mark DeWitt – I revisit pop songs. I particularly like Chic. Nile Rodgers was an innovator at the time.
Jerry Ford – I will take in every group that you mentioned, then I will throw in the Carpenters, the outsiders, Cryan, Shames, association, Gene Pitney, and Buckinghams.
Dave Adams – I grew up with The Partridge Family and The Cowsills.
Stephen Aldrich – Dave Adams: The Cowsills have become hipster favorites these days, a guilty pleasure no more.
Bryce Driesenga – I’ll sometimes go through phases of jamming to some Will Smith tracks. We are still living in the Willennium, after all.
John Nowak – Friday by Rebecca Black. And I AM proud of it!
Denny Larsen – Gene Pitney’s 5-octave voice!
Hannah Martin – Aaron Carter! May he RIP. Sorry not sorry. Also Dreamstreet/Jesse McCartney
DeAnna Owen Harvey – Cher: I enjoy her strong rockin voice
Daniel Parsons – Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Roy Orbison. Also loved Gene Pitney.
Michael Packer -I think The Cowsills are GREAT. I brought Susan Cowsill in years ago with another band. I understand The Cowsills are touring again.
Jeff Armstrong – Rick Springfield count? The Monkees?
Rick Wilson – Classics IV, Young Rascals,
Randy Scott Marsh – The Lovin’ Spoonful, Captain Beefheart, Yardbirds, Mothers of Invention, Spirit’s first album.
Jeff Martin – The 1960s hits of Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.
Jakey Thomas – I think “You Can’t Stop The Bum Rush” by Len from 1999 is one of the best albums ever … this isn’t a guilty pleasure, just a pleasure. And I’m very proud of it haha. But the way my wife responds has me thinking otherwise
Jack Leaver – Tommy James, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Herman’s Hermits
Michael J Vizard – The Wozard of Iz…An Electronic Odyssey… always popped it in the 8 track player.
Dale J Dreyer – The Association was That Band, Brian and The Boys were #1, but the love songs of those talents in Association were my go to slow dance tunes.
Brian Kelly Rampenthal – I love ‘70’s top 40. Memories of my adolescence.
Serita Crowley – Love ‘em all. Even though not from my era but were times of some of the best music ‘60s and ‘70s. I love The O’Jays The Dramatics The Stylistics The Temptations The Emotions Curtis Mayfield Jim Croce Bread and Guess Who and many many more!
AJ Dunning – +1 for The Guess Who; huge fan. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons- writing & production on those early hits are amazing.
Melodee Van Bogelen Horsford – Still love all of those. My guilty pleasure is John Denver!
Jeff Frazier – Steppenwolf.
Greg Baxter – The Smiths – “Louder Than Bombs.” Morrissey’s lyrics didn’t age as well as Marr’s guitar or the production but it’s still a fun listen.
Adam Kenyon – Michael W. Smith, “Go West Young Man.” I wish I didn’t still like it but I totally do.
Jon Miner – Black Sabbath
Jim Leitch – Association, Carpenters, Cowsills. Not a dud question. I had to think twice about fessin’ up to The Rain, The Park and Other Things. Hey; good is good.
Daniel P Hudelson – I don’t ever have guilt over what music I like.
Lance Hendrickson – With a side of guilt? Blondie. Absolutely, Blondie. So much of what they did was 100% corporate, but I was smitten. Years later I bought the box set or whatever, and I found some hidden gems.
Frank Youngman – The Association
Diane Scott – Harry Chapin.
Paul Brewer – I am a jazz musician to the marrow of my bones. However, I do love the singing of George Jones!
Brent Godfrey – The Tubes. One of my favorite concerts of all time back in 1978.
Brian Borbot – Sooo many. I’ve been listening to a lot of Bachman Turner Overdrive since the drummer Robbie just past. Truly underrated band. Ooh, and don’t forget The Producers.
Lee Chase -I don’t see Johnny Rivers here yet!
Diane Yob – Tom Rush, The Shaggs, and Captain Beefheart. But feeling guilty? Nope.
Lar Fitzgerald – Mott the Hoople, Monkees, Herman’s Hermits, Buffalo Springfield, Grass Roots, Bobby Fuller Four, SRC
