THE READER RESPONSES:
James Brown – Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra
Patrick Harrison – I had tickets to see Lynyrd Skynyrd at Wings Stadium when they had their plane crash. I know later versions of the band were great but I just couldn’t bring myself to go see them. With Gary Rossington’s passing I wish I would have.
John Harvey – Prince
Tony Norkus – Salem
Rhonda Miller – Pink Floyd. I was always on Dead Tour when they came my way.
CT Revere – Peter Gabriel.
Lori Barnard Stratton – Prince, David Bowie, Michael Jackson
Dino Mor – Prince.
Ron Clause – Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors with Jim Morrison and Queen with Freddie Mercury. Oh and James Brown which I came real close as he was playing the HOB in LA when I was there, but had meetings that prevented me from doing so.
Brian J. Bowe – The MC5
Brian Haik – Not seeing David Bowie perform is my biggest regret.
Mike Dodge – Jimi Hendrix Experience for sure. I had a ticket in my hand to see Led Zeppelin when Bonham died, that’s a long-lasting miss.
Rick Wilson – I had just sent for tickets when Bonham died. Took forever to get my refund.
Sarah Fairbanks Keen – Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees
Thomas Leonard Saxe – Pink Floyd, and The Beatles for sure, although who would take an 11-year-old to a Beatles concert? Very lucky to have seen Bowie from the front row ($7!) and Led Zep.
Steve Middendorp – I would’ve liked to see the Rolling Stones, but their concerts were always far away and expensive. Soundgarden would’ve been amazing to see, but never had a good opportunity.
Steve Secor – Smiths, Zeppelin and The Beatles
John Dauksts – Emerson Lake and Palmer and the Moody Blues
Jerry Donley – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Hans Voss – Muddy Waters
Jackie Sirianni – David Bowie.
Mark Sturr – Tom Petty
Ryan K Wilson – Beethoven
Craig Vaughan – Talking Heads
Robert Biggie G Gill – Bands I wished I could’ve seen, but was too young: Zeppelin, Queen, Journey (with Steve Perry), Styx (with Dennis DeYoung). Van Halen (with DLR). Bands I could’ve seen, but didn’t for some reason: Pantera (original members), AIC (with Layne), Jeff Beck (still kicking myself for that), DLR (with Steve Vai/Billy Sheehan)… there’s probably more
Michigan Mickey D Swinehart – Pink Floyd “Animals” tour.
Andrew Ogrodzinski – Jimi died when I was 3 so that never would be happened. Led Zeppelin stopped touring when I was 12 so that was unlikely. Could’ve seen Rush and John Lee Hooker but missed out.
Jack Jensen – The Grateful Dead, with Jerry…
Lee Chase – The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. I had a chance to see Jimi in Chicago when I was 16 but it didn’t work out.
Chad Michael Wedeven – I should have ponied up for the ’08 Genesis reunion, when Phil could still play. Also the Police reunion because that was a minor miracle.
Harry E Rutherford – Frank Zappa.
Chuck Whiting – I’m really bummed I didn’t see Vulfpeck before they got super famous.
Nic Stubbs – U.K. with Allan Holdsworth
Matt Kerwin – Steely Dan’s reunion in ’93. Grateful Dead in the 90’s. I feel my musical interests didn’t really start to grow until ’95.
Stephen Aldrich – For you Led Zep guys, I saw ’em at Cobo, drunk, sloppy, and playing bad rockabilly. Left after about 20 mins. We were at a Roxy Music show next door at Ford Aud., headed back to the Cobo ramp, and the doors were open, anyone could go in an watch Zep for free, which was about wat it was worth.
Rex Larsen – Worst show I ever attended, Led Zeppelin at the Chicago Stadium
Lee Chase – I’ve heard that LZ could be “uneven” live. I saw the October ’69 show at Olympia in Detroit. The band seemed to be “on” that night but there were a few snags with scheduling and the sound that took away from the overall experience.
Rick Wilson – Rex Larsen was that the 77 tour when they played a very short set because “Jimmy Page has got gas?”
Greg Secor – Zappa
Paul Wyatt – Probably Roxy Music. Or Mark Knopfler.
Justin Stover – The Police and Nick Cave tie
Brian Hoekstra – Ramones, INXS, Kinks
Daniel W Dawe – The J. Geils Band. I did get to see Peter Wolf mid 90s.
David Clark – Led Zeppelin
Art Griffin – The Scorpions 🦂
Rex Larsen – Robert Johnson. Hollywood Fats
Ken Bierschbach – Two come to mind immediately…Elvis at Wings Stadium in April, 1977, and plans to see Lynrd Skynrd at the same venue in late ‘77 or early ‘78.
Cynthia E Arnold – John Prine
Jennifer Hunker – Pearl Jam
Don Clapham – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: I kept saying I would see them next time they were in town and sadly, Tom passed away and I never did. Lesson learned; don’t keep putting off seeing an artist or a band you really like.
Kevin Riley – Rory Gallagher
Mary Koopmans – Genesis/Lamb lies down at the Grand Valley dome. Did catch Floyd/Animals at Soldier Field. Joe.
Patti Ann McNulty – Queen, Prince, The Eagles
Kevin Murphy – Had tickets to see the Clash in GR, I think ’82. The girl I was dating didn’t like them so I sold tickets to a friend. Wish I could have seen the Beach Boys before Carl Wilson passed away.
Lar Fitzgerald – Jeff Beck, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac
Barry Bazza Crawford – Stood feet away from John Cale (Piano – Guitar) with Chris Speeding and two young band members at the Paradise in Boston. Dead in the summer when most of the college kids went home. About 50 people there. It was like a special show just for us. “Guts Guts got no Guts” ” A one of a kind show!
Rick Wilson – Pink Floyd is my most glaring omission
James Wolf – The Hives, I honestly don’t even know if they came to GR at anytime. The Vines, I had tickets to see them at the Orbit Room but came down with strep throat the day before and couldn’t go. Heard from a friend that it was an awesome show.
Josh Giebel – Cramps
Brent Godfrey – Randy Weston at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Had hotel reservations and planning on going and then an “emergency” at work forced me to cancel and work over Labor Day Weekend.
Rick Slachta – Bummed that I missed Jeff Beck.
Steph Belcher – Prince by a mile
Doug A Burkholder – Peter Gabriel Shaking the Tree
Jerry Ford – Tom Petty, I always had something else going on. E.L&P
Daniel P Hudelson – In the early ’70’s, I was going to a lot of shows in Chicago, but passed on going with my brother and cousin to see Queen, opening for Mott the Hoople, at the legendary, amazing Aragon Ballroom, right around when Sheer Heart Attack was released.
Susan Park – Joni Mitchell….Sometime during the past year, I read that she had actually played here in Michigan just after I took a teaching job in a small town in S.W. Michigan, fresh out of college! I was shocked because I never knew she had come so near! I have followed her since the first album!!! Back then, you only had newspapers to let you know about your schedules, and it was very hit-or-miss. I really couldn’t even afford to subscribe to a newspaper at that point in my life! We certainly didn’t have the internet back in 1971 either! Joni has ALWAYS been at the top of my “Concert Regrets list.
John Matthes – Reading everyone’s regrets..I feel thankful for having seen many of these great bands posted. On my regret list: The Police(saw Sting in the late 80s). Pink Floyd with Waters(saw the 1987 tour). Genesis with Gabriel(Saw Phil’s Genesis 3 times). And of course Zeppelin(saw Plant with Phil Collins on drums, and saw Jimmy page and Paul Rogers in the 80s).
Mike Ward: PsychoSongs – Jimi Hendrix
Mike Pawloski – Bonnie Raitt at the Orbit room, Ozric Tentacles there as well. Heard they were great shows.
David Zeemering – Van Morrison – hands down.
Teresa Marie Olee – Van Morrison
Adam Bogues – Soundgarden
Darcy Wilkin – Michael Nesmith.
Denny Larsen – Elvis
Rick Wilson – We saw The Stones at Soldier Field in ‘78. Muddy Waters was also in town. Tried to convince my pals to go see Muddy’s show the night before on the belief the Stones might join him but nobody wanted to go. Sure enough they did and we missed a great opportunity
Bruce Madden – Hendrix.
Ian Gorman – R.E.M.
Jakey Thomas – White Stripes
Derek Ketchum – David Bowie
Timmy Rodriguez – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at DTE Energy Theater. Said to myself I’ll see them when they come around again….Also The Format at the intersection. They broke up the following year.
Isaac Powrie – Levon Helm that time he came to FMG
Chelsea Whitaker – Rush – although technically I attended a Rush show while in the womb.
Greg Durkee – John Prine.
Diane Atanasoff – J.Geils band
Chris Verrier – D.R.I
Mathew Ulrich – Pink Floyd
Jeffrey Shell – Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Donna Mills – Had tickets to see Harry Chapin but he was killed in a freakish car accident.
Brien Dews – Many years ago Ray Charles was supposed to play at GRCC and for some reason the show got canceled. Never did get to see him and have always regretted that.
