So it’s no surprise that impressive crowds turned out for the Dare to Be Weird tribute to Weird Al Yankovic with The Brandino Extravaganza at Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids on Saturday (a benefit for Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids), the same night that veteran Michigan singer and comedian Heywood Banks lit up Shakespeare’s Lower Level in Kalamazoo.
Of course, there was more than that on tap over the weekend, with busy venues in The Intersection hosting performances by country-pop’s Priscilla Block, alt-reggae-rockers Artikal Sound System, German DJ Infekt (a 360 in-the-round show) and the WGRD Heavyweights Round 1 competition, with Flood the Desert winning that first round.
Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe also did what it could to shake off the winter doldrums with Saturday night’s “SADR” music fest (Seasonal Affective Disorder Relief) which included sets by Overly Polite Tornadoes, Vida Eterna, Discus and Blood at Ease.
Earlier in the week, Kentucky country and southern rock band Ole 60 and Oklahoma’s Southall packed GLC Live at 20 Monroe on Thursday, the same night that Kalamazoo drummer Keith Hall and guitarist Chico Pinheiro brought their Brazilian jazz mini-tour to Crawlspace Comedy Theatre in Kalamazoo.
