Talk about getting into the holiday spirit.
Michigan bands across the board were doing just that over the weekend, with Local Spins just sampling a few of the Christmas-splashed taking place across the region — because, unfortunately, we can’t get to them all.
In what’s become a festival annual, pre-Christmas soiree, Rockford-bred singer Bradley Sinclair & The Corey Sound delivered passionate takes on holiday fare during two shows Friday at the Midtown listening room in Grand Rapids, prompting fan Charlene Brehl Hammontree to gush on Facebook: “We have done this every year and I am finding this tradition just as fun each and every year. The talent right here is unbelievable.”
Another tradition: Kalamazoo’s All American Funk Parade lighting up a holiday show for the fifth time t Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo, led by saxophonist Aaron Stinson. The nearly sold-out Back Room boasted an energetic, singing-and-dancing-along crowd filled with Santa costumes and ugly sweaters.
Country singer and West Michigan favorite Kari Lynch continued her fundraising tradition for the 13th year in a row at Butcher Block Social in Caledonia, rolling out her Very Merry Jingle Jam on Saturday benefiting Mel Trotter Ministries. The event featured a who’s who lineup of performers, closing the night with a hilarious parody set to the tune of “Stacy’s Mom”(Fountains of Wayne) that they threw together during rehearsal the night before.
The night before, guitarist Mark Lavengood brought a tribute to legendary singer-songwriter John Prine to Bell’s with special guests Grace Theisen, Jen Sygit and Chris Zhender, a show emceed by Farmer John Crissman. The show, a fundraiser for the Smiling Acres Music Festival, boasted a collaborative on-stage celebration of Prine’s enduring songs.
Saturday also saw a tour stop by singer-songwriter Adam Doleac at The Stache inside The Intersection in Grand Rapids, a pared-down affair compared to previous tours.
Friday also saw a holiday tour stop by Michigan favorites The Accidentals, along with the Kaboom Studio Orchestra, at The Big Room in Grand Rapids.
