West Michigan's music scene
If anything exemplifies the eclectic and diverse nature of Michigan’s music scene, it’s the latest Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart.
The chart representing the regional releases that received the most radio airplay at WYCE (88.1 FM) in August covers the gamut when it comes to new music embraced by listeners and programmers.
At the top, there’s the ferocious rock of Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps’ “Perpetual Motion Machine,” with the Grand Rapids-bred, Nashville-based PerShayla spending much of the summer touring and performing behind the EP in her home state. The album jumped from No. 3 in July to No. 1 in August.
At No. 2, Detroit rapper Black Milk made his chart debut with his latest album, “Everybody Good?” — which Pitchfork described as “a stone-cold groove with a hip-hop twist” and a collection that “unites rap, soul, funk, rock and ghettotech with meticulous craftsmanship and w wonky-yet-smooth touch.”
Just behind that, West Michigan world music trio Whorled — whose tracks range from Celtic charm to gypsy swing fervor — made the chart for the second month in a row with its debut album, “Reimagined,” this time at No. 3.
At No. 4, it was another debut — the first album from Lowell’s Vernon Potts, an alternative rock affair oozing airy, pop-hued vocals.
And finally, at No. 5, it was the vintage country vibe of The Bootstrap Boys, who made the chart yet again with their latest, Texas-produced collection, “Hungry & Sober.”
