One event drew eager throngs across the region, with music lovers embracing fresh vinyl versions of memorable classics.
Another drew a sold-out crowd of enthused fans to celebrate performance of memorable classics by a much-beloved, West Michigan ‘90s band recording the special evening for a concert video.
With weather finally starting to resemble spring, mid-April brought the return of Record Store Day, with independent record shops across the state — including Vertigo Music in Grand Rapids, Green Light Music and Satellite Records in Kalamazoo and many more — filling up elbow-to-elbow with vinyl collectors snagging special, limited RSD releases by a dizzying array of artists, new and old.
And Dodds Record Shop on Grand Rapids’ West Side, once again hosted music by Beaver Xing and more, with owner Rev Charles Preston Smith leading his usual, rollicking “Record Store Day Parade” up and down a few blocks of Bridge Street NW. (Check out the video below.)

On Stage Again: Papa Vegas on Thursday. (Photo/Al McAvoy)
Earlier in the week, Grand Rapids alt-rock heroes in Papa Vegas reunited for a milestone performance at The Collaborative Lab in Comstock Park, preserved for posterity in an upcoming concert film.
The band whose biggest hit, “Bombshell,” hit the Top 20, “rocked out” during Thursday’s concert, after indie-rock’s Low Phase opened the evening with “a sweet set,” said sound engineer and Papa Vegas associate Al McAvoy.
“The highlights were just a really good time reconnecting with fans and friends,” he said.
“We had fun with videos and photos on the video wall as a nice backdrop of nostalgia while the band played. Super fun.”
The band expects to release the video/concert film in about six months.
Elsewhere, Dogs in a Pile fired up Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe with northern Michigan’s Silver Creek Revival making its SpeakEZ Lounge debut in Grand Rapids, unfurling the band’s unique take on Americana and alt-country.
