West Michigan's music scene
In Grand Haven, the cozy Sunday performance at a record shop featured a musician billed as an “f-ing legend” — namely, J.D. Pinkus of punk/rock’s The Butthole Surfers, who not only rolled out an “epic show” at Off the Record, but signed autographs and posed for photos with fans and patrons.
In Free Soil, 87 miles to the north, the Forest Trail Music Festival closed out three days of epic Michigan music with sets by Crosscut Kings, Aaron Wright, Alex Teller and Darrell Boger — and this after notable stars such as Chirp, Erin Zindle & The Ragbirds, Whorled, Smokin’ Dobroleles and many more regaled audiences earlier in the weekend.
And in Kalamazoo, indie-folk/rock’s Waxahatchee got “Right Back To It” with opener Tré Burt at Bell’s Brewery Beer Garden on Sunday night, delivering what photographer Derek Ketchum called “an amazing night” covering 24 songs over 90 minutes amid muggy, hot conditions.
