He did indeed once “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” and Muhammad Ali’s strength, stature and significance as an African-American icon is unassailable and enduring.
So, as a soundtrack to celebrate the legendary boxer’s 70th birthday today (in 2012), here are five songs to help pay tribute to his legacy, with videos to boot.
- “The Boxer,” Simon & Garfunkel – A classic song for an American classic, this 1969 hit is every bit as enduring as Ali himself.
- “Hurricane,” Bob Dylan – Yes, this protest tune was written by Dylan about boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter but it’s become a symbol in the fight against racism, something Ali certainly represents as well.
- “Unauthorized Biography of Muhammad Ali,” Shaun Boothe – A fine hip-hop tribute to the life of Muhammad Ali.
- “I Won’t Back Down,” Tom Petty – A signature Petty track that fits perfectly with Ali’s in-the-ring attitude.
- “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” Pat Benatar – I hesitated putting this on the list because, well, it’s too easy and obvious. But Ali’s best shot was probably as good as anybody who has ever put on a pair of boxing gloves.
There are many others, like the Isley Brothers’ “Fight the Power” and Eminem’s “Fight Music,” so please post your favorites.
