Michigan bands aim for big splash in 2019 Tiny Desk Contest

Once again, the National Public Radio competition is drawing hundreds of video entries from artists across the country, and many of them are from the Great Lakes State. View more than 30 of the Michigan entries.

Once again, judges in National Public Radio Tiny Desk Concerts’ annual band competition to win an on-air performance slot inside the NPR Music office of “All Songs Considered” in Washington D.C. are sorting through hundreds of video entries submitted by bands and solo artists from across the country.

And once again, Michigan artists are putting their best foot forward for a shot at NPR glory.

The winner — who will be announced in May (later than in past years) — will have the opportunity to play a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR and join a tour of the United States with NPR and Blue Microphones.

As always, this year’s panel of judges is led by Bob Boilen, host of NPR Music’s “All Songs Considered.” Other panelists include NPR’s Rodney Carmichael, Seattle DJ Abbie Gobeli, Los Angeles DJ Raul Campos, indie-rock’s Lucy Dacus, singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and R&B singer Ledisi. (The deadline for entry was April 14.)

Here are 2018 submissions by more than 30 Michigan acts, covering a dizzying array of genres. Some are professionally produced, some are delightfully homemade, most feature desks somewhere along the way. Enjoy.
