On Saturday, they’ll pump up the annual Local First Street Party outside Bistro Bella Vita in downtown Grand Rapids (along with The Crane Wives, ConvoTronics, Cabildo, JRob & Bedrock: The Foundation, Hollywood Makeout, Wealthy & Diamond and Molly Bouwsma Schultz & Friends).
Formed 14 years ago by multi-instrumentalist and singer Julio Villalobos, the eight-piece band revels in Cumbia-inspired, Latin-flavored music with a rock-edged punch, something that helps turn every performance into a dance-hued festival.
Five members of the group — Julio Cesar Viveros on electric guitar and vocals, Dustin Miller on drums, Jonathon Barrera Mikulich on saxophone, Hector Rodriguez on baritone saxophone and Eddie Killowatts on bass — stopped by the studios of WYCE (88.1 FM) for this weeks’ edition of Local Spins on WYCE to perform two original songs, “Como Exprano” and “No Soy de aqui.” (Villalobos, percussionist Josh Dunigan and keyboard player and violist Nate Bliton will also join the band on stage Saturday.) Listen to the performances in the podcast below.
Cabildo is wrapping up work on a new studio EP that it hopes to release later this year and has a full summer of performances ahead, including June 14 at Cherry Street Park, June 17 at Buttermilk Jamboree in Delton, June 29 at The Pyramid Scheme with Wailing Souls and July 6 for GRAM on the Green overlooking Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids. See the full schedule on the band’s Facebook page.
Saturday’s Local First Street Party is hosted by the Local First organization, with children’s activities, local food and beer, hula hooping, breakdancing, recycled art and sidewalk chalk also on the docket. Get more information online here.
This week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE also featured the debut of new tracks by Barbarossa Brothers, The Bronk Bros., Infinity Pilot, Dan Rickabus, Jared Sjoblom and Justin Avdek & The Underground Circus, along with music from Hollywood Makeout and JRob, plus an interview with Local First’s Anthony Wilder Puzzuoli.
