The Muteflutes may be in the perfect position as a band, as they work on new songs for a third studio album after solidifying the group’s five-piece lineup with release of 2014’s “American Dream.”

Comfortable with their roles and their direction, the Grand Rapids folk-rockers are headed into a Minneapolis recording studio in January to lay down tracks for songs that exude more “warmth, positivity and hopefulness.”
“It’s not more folky,” says guitarist Aaron Wildey. “I think there is a bit more rock in it or more dirt on the electrics. I think it’s got a bigger feel.”
After more than five years, says frontman, lead singer and guitarist Micah McLaughlin, The Muteflutes — McLaughlin, Wildey, drummer Levi Gardner, keyboard player Marie Dornan and bassist Adam Thompson — have settled into a comfortable groove.
“It feels to me like the closest to what I’d want to say, ‘This is kind of our sound.’ There were some changes in members of the band between the first and second album,” he says. “It’s all been the same five members here now for almost two-and-a-half, three years. It kind of feels like we hit our stride and this is our sound.”
They showed off that sound during their appearance on Friday for Local Spins on WYCE, playing two brand new tunes, “Worry About the Wind” and “Just Like You,” and chatting about their upcoming recording project and an upcoming performance Wednesday night at Grand Rapids’ SpeakEZ Lounge as part of the Local Spins Wednesdays series.
