Maybe it shouldn’t be surprising, considering the fact that the compilation album boasts tracks from some of West Michigan’s most popular artists, including The Crane Wives, Vox Vidorra, Lady Ace Boogie, Hannah Rose & The GravesTones and The Outer Vibe.
As a result, the “Local Spins Live at River City Studios: The Sessions, Vol. 1” released in late May topped all other albums and EPs by local and regional artists in total spins played on the air at WYCE-FM (88.1) in June, entering The Hot Top 5 at No. 1.
Local Spins’ debut album chose some of the best tracks culled from intimate “HopCat Presents Local Spins Live at River City” sessions staged at Grand Rapids’ River City Studios over the past two years. Other artists on the CD engineered by River City Studios’ owner Roy Wallace include Bigfoot Buffalo, The Muteflutes, Watching for Foxes, Lambo, Olivia Mainville & The Aquatic Troupe, Ghost Heart and Big Dudee Roo.
Bassist Max Lockwood of Big Dudee Roo, featured on the album with the track, “Islands of Light,” called the compilation “a unique and exciting contribution to the music scene.”

At No. 2 for most June spins was Mark Lavengood’s new solo album, “We’ve Come Along,” which made The Hot Top 5 for the second month in row, after topping the chart for May. And right behind Lavengood was the brand new solo project from Dan Rickabus, drummer for The Crane Wives, titled “Void Journal.”
Rounding out the Hot Top 5 were new albums from B-Side Growlers (who host a CD-release show for the new “Home Brewed” album as part of the Local Spins Wednesdays series at SpeakEZ Lounge next week) and Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers.
Check out videos from some of the chart-toppers below, along with the eclectic list of new local and regional music added to WYCE-FM’s playlist in June. And tune in to Local Spins on WYCE (88.1 FM) at 11 a.m. Friday (July 7) when station manager Quinn Mathews will be the guest host and The Zannies will be the in-studio guests.
