It was a weekend of celebratory concerts.
At a jam-packed Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, Dizzybird Records and owner Nicole LaRae marked the 11th anniversary of the indie record label with impressive performances by Georgia’s Gringo Star (debuting a new album) and the reunion of West Michigan’s psych-rock phenoms Heaters, plus crowd-pleasing sets by Hollywood Makeout and Crystal Trench — not to mention a goofy, smile-inducing dance contest.
That same night, a few blocks to the northwest, Michigan-bred hard rock band Pop Evil lit up GLC Live at 20 Monroe for a homecoming party of its own, with country star Kane Brown doing much the same at Van Andel Arena just a stone’s throw away — with electronic music’s Shades around the block at The Intersection.

In Kalamazoo on Friday, veteran blues band Out of Favor Boys celebrated with an album-release show for “Love & Sorrow,” unleashing two full sets and nearly three hours of “jamming along” at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe. The band also featured special guests, with many fans on their feet and dancing.
The next night, it was singer-songwriter Jon Hayes’ turn, hosting an EP-preview-release show, with Deerfield Run also on the bill at Bell’s.
Earlier in the week, Greensky Bluegrass’ Dave Bruzza revved things up at Holland’s Park Theatre with help from Fruition’s Kellen Asebroek and the Full Cord trio unfurled their award-winning bluegrass magic at Grand Rapids’ SpeakEZ Lounge for the next-to-last Local Spins Wednesdays show of the spring. (Local Spins’ 13th anniversary party with The Legal Immigrants will close it out on May 21.)
