Michigan’s favorite musical son advances once again in the NBC singing competition, giving a shout-out to his mother in the process.
With a much higher comfort level in attacking this week’s song selection – Sting’s “Fields of Gold” – northern Michigan’s Joshua Davis did not wait long Tuesday to learn his fate in his journey toward the Top 6 on “The Voice.”

Indeed, the singer-songwriter with an enthusiastic local fan base was the first contestant “saved by America,” announced within minutes of the show’s opening Tuesday night. Fans voted for the eight finalists competing in the popular NBC singing competition. No surprise, after Davis’ rendition of the Sting tune soared to No. 2 on the iTunes chart among the remaining contestants, behind only Sawyer Fredericks’ “Simple Man.”
As the Traverse City singer put it before Monday’s live performance of the Sting song: “I feel like this is a song I would write.”
Indeed, the confident rendition took on Davis’ signature tone with a hint of that rasp that judges and audiences seem to embrace – unlike his less impressive take last week on James Bay’s “Hold Back the River,” which ended up putting him in the bottom three. That forced an “instant save” from fans after he performed Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.” (Check out the video of his performance of “Fields of Gold” below.)
“So refreshing to see you get back to what I feel like is what you’re best at,” judge Blake Shelton remarked. “Last week was kind of a left turn. This tonight proves why you still deserve to be here.”
Team leader Adam Levine called it an “absolutely stunning job.
“I’m super excited,” Levine added during Tuesday’s live show. “I think he’s really different and I love the guy.”
Prior to Monday’s performance, Davis also paid tribute to his mother, saying, “I owe a lot to my mom.” Last week, he gave a shout-out to his avid Michigan fan base.
Davis, who started his remarkable journey on “The Voice” early this year after being asked to audition by the show, is the sole remaining member of Team Adam to move forward in the competition. At 37, the singer-songwriter and member of Michigan’s Steppin’ In It is also, by far, the oldest contestant among the finalists.
