West Michigan's music scene
Amid the fireworks and parades and Fourth of July hoopla, West Michigan got a healthy taste of funk and blues over the weekend.
Fans also got a chance to celebrate some Michigan-bred talent.
On Friday, Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo not only hosted celebrated New Orleans funk band Dumpstaphunk for a night of dance-friendly grooves, but attendees got a special treat: Chicago-area artist Neal Francis, whose music oozes a soulful New Orleans vibe, was added to the bill promoting a debut single with an album on the way in November.
Francis’ band happens to feature a couple of West Michigan natives: drummer Collin O’Brien of Grand Rapids (Quadraphonic) and guitarist Kellen Beanzma (a Western Michigan University alum).
Speaking of West Michigan natives with a new album in the works, blues-rock guitarist Jake Kershaw of Marshall headlined the first-ever “Rockin’ the Boardwalk” on Saturday in Grand Haven, with WMPA 93.1 FM hosting a free day of music that included sets by Beer for Breakfast, Trixy Tang, Ruxy Muzik and Kershaw at the new Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium.
