Punxsutawney Phil has spoken: Hold onto your shovels, scarves and ice scrapers, because we’ve got six more weeks of winter ahead.
OK, he didn’t actually speak. But having seen his shadow this morning as part of an annual, much ballyhooed Pennsylvania tradition, the corpulent rodent thereby made his prediction and henceforth will retreat to his burrow until mid-March or thereabouts when spring safely arrives.

Meteorological Rodent: Punxsutawney Phil this morning.
Local Spins, meanwhile, won’t retreat anywhere and predicts that like the movie, “Groundhog Day,” you’ll want to relive today’s concert recap and photo gallery over and over and over again.
It starts with Wednesday’s “Irene Stearns Day” celebration at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo — a fundraiser for the Sounds of the Zoo festival that not only paid tribute to the women who built Gibson guitars during World War II, but also featured performances by The Incantations, Chris Canas, Marissa Aguirre, Ellis & M.E. and more.
Writer Cassandra Kipp recapped the evening this way:
Irene Stearns wasn’t present at the Sounds of the Zoo celebration of her 104th birthday on Wednesday at Bell’s, but her presence was felt with virtually mediated “Happy Birthday” sing-alongs and the premiere of the “Kalamazoo Gals” documentary trailer about the women who built Gibson guitars during World War II.
John Stein, who performed the jazz standard, “Misty,” also discussed how he’s “played Gibson guitars since he was just a small guy.” Lisa Mackie of The Incantations was even inspired to write a song about Stearns and the Kalamazoo Gals. Ellis and M.E.’s main vocalist happily told the audience about her hundred-year-old guitar and Southeast Michigan blues musician Chris Canas unfurled beautiful, almost haunting blues pieces. Canas and guest Marissa Aguirre also performed a little twist on “My Girl” with “My Gal.” Zero Sun provided a counterpoint with a more classic rock and electric vibe than the previous performers, crafting a refreshing after-taste.
Proceeds from the show will benefit September’s Sounds of the Zoo festival, with the “Kalamazoo Gals” documentary screened at Bronson Park on Sept. 26.
