In South Haven, it was all about cars and thundering bass music.
In Kalamazoo, it was rootsy blues and soul.
In Grand Rapids, dance-pop and drag queens ruled the day, er, evening.

• South Haven’s GridLife Midwest Festival at GingerMan Raceway dropped the green flag on racing, drifting and a cavalcade of electronic music, courtesy of Crankdat, Tape B, INZO, Volpe and many more on Friday and Saturday, with record crowds and long lines for camping entry;

• The swampy Southern blues of the North Mississippi All Stars had folks at Bell’s Beer Garden in Kalamazoo up and dancing on Thursday, with Tank & The Bangas and Ariel J. following things up on Friday with more dance-inspiring strains of the New Orleans-fueled hip hop, funk and soul variety (Tank & The Bangas open for Trombone Shorty at Meijer Gardens on Monday);
• Pattie Gonia (aka, environmentalist Wyn Wiley), meanwhile, brought an upbeat night of dance-pop and drag queen entertainment to The Big Room in Grand Rapids, vowing to return next year;
• The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, meanwhile, hosted a showcase of regional acts earlier in the week, led by The Westside (with Julie’s Bones, The Mannequins and Fuzzbuster also on the bill).
