Starting as a teen, Grand Haven High School graduate Garrett Borns impressed audiences at talent shows and venues from Spring Lake to Grand Rapids, recording his impressive debut album at Bill Chrysler’s studio in Grand Haven.
But that was just the beginning: Since moving to Los Angeles in 2013 and changing his stage name to Borns, the pop singer-songwriter has steadily impressed music industry execs, signing a deal with Universal Music Group’s Interscope Records and releasing his major label debut EP, “Candy,” late last year.
And on Tuesday night, he made his national television debut on TBS’s “Conan,” performing his hit single, “10,000 Emerald Pools” with his band.
From all indications, it was a solid, triumphant debut, with talk show host Conan O’Brien greeting and congratulating Borns and band members after their performance. “We had an amazing time,” Borns remarked in comments later posted on his Facebook page.

It’s just the latest in a series of milestones for the 22-year-old singer. His single, “10,000 Emerald Pools,” was named the iTunes single of the week in late December, This Is Our Jam named Borns one of “15 bands to watch in 2015,” and Indie Shuffle included the single in its Best Indie Rock of 2014.
Borns joins New York soul/dance/pop/folk band Misterwives on a national tour starting Feb. 26 in Philadelphia. The tour won’t stop in Grand Rapids, but will play The Shelter below St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit on March 1. Several shows on the tour already are sold out; it wraps up April 1.
