West Michigan's music scene
Summertime in Michigan is all about reveling in music amid the great outdoors.
Indeed, over the past decade, communities big and small across the state have launched and embraced free weekday and weeknight concerts starring veteran and emerging Michigan acts covering a broad range of genres and approaches.
The family-friendly shows — hosted by more than 100 cities and towns — take place along rivers and in parks, drawing lawn-chair-toting music fans, children and tourists, while giving local and regional bands a sun-splashed showcase for their music.

Rockford’s Tuesday night United Bank Rogue River Blues Series along the river in downtown Rockford’s Garden Park often draws more than 1,000 people (who also wander and shop the downtown area), while Grand Haven’s Free Friday Night Concerts offer a picturesque backdrop at Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium on the Grand River channel. Grand Rapids’ Relax at Rosa series fires up Thursday lunchtimes at the refurbished Rosa Parks Circle downtown. And those are just three examples of the charming nature of these concerts.
Local Spins maintains the only comprehensive guide to these free community concerts, and today, we reveal lineups for several of them, with many more in our Free Outdoor Community Concerts 2023 Guide.
