West Michigan's music scene
West Michigan’s music weekend closed with some chuckles.
Comedian and musician Fred Armisen for the first time brought his “Comedy for Musicians But Everyone is Welcome” tour to a sold-out Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids on Sunday.
The actor who co-created the sketch comedy series “Portlandia,” served as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” and earned a Grammy Award nomination for his comedy album, “Standup for Drummers,” pulled lots of musical rabbits out of his hat during the show.
Telling jokes that “only musicians will understand,” Armisen not only regaled fans with amusing quips about guitar chords and such, but also led sing-alongs from impromptu songs he created by “looking at T-shirts figuring out what the lyrics should be.”
Armisen, by the way, plays Ann Arbor’s The Blind Pig tonight (Oct. 9).
In Kalamazoo, meanwhile, up-and-coming alternative R&B/hip hop/pop act Headband Henny hosted a weekend album-release show at Green Door Distilling Co., the same night that Wisconsin acoustic roots/bluegrass band Horsehoes & Hand Grenades revved things up at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe.
