At night, the rains came to Rothbury for the opening salvo of Electric Forest, but not before thousands of fans enjoyed bands such as A Tribe Called Red and that inimitable Electric Forest vibe.
Electric Forest is back, and so are thousands of those Electric Forest devotees who embrace the grooviness of this hippie musical convention on Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, north of Muskegon.

Thursday’s opening salvo featured the usual lineups of colorful young fans “antsy for things to begin,” flaunting “glitter and hoops and dirty feet,” according to Local Spins photographer Anna Sink, before rains finally swept in during the evening. Even then, despite the wet and cool conditions, folks “were still raging” for Lotus after midnight on the Sherwood Court Stage.
(Sadly, there also was a tragedy on opening day, with the death of a 21-year-old Portage man, as reported by WOOD TV8 online here.)
Also spotted this year: an inflatable elephant, a dinosaur on a neon leash and zillions of hula hoops, and that’s certainly just the tip of the iceberg for a four-day festival featuring more than 100 bands — electronic to jam — on six stages, led by The String Cheese Incident.
