Country artist Dwight Yoakam has canceled his scheduled June 7 appearance at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park “due to a conflict with his filming schedule as an actor.”
The announcement comes just a day before tickets for the summer concert series at the outdoor amphitheater go on sale to Meijer Gardens members. Even with the cancellation, the 29-concert series remains the largest in the amphitheater’s 10-year history.
According to the IMDb.com website, Yoakam is playing the role of George Meade in the “To Appomattox” TV mini-series which uncovers “the emotional lives of America’s Civil War generals, their wives and families … against a backdrop of a war.”
The influential singer and guitarist has balanced his music career with a fair number of acting roles since the mid-1990s when he played in “Sling Blade.”
It would have been Yoakam’s first-ever appearance at Meijer Gardens and the second concert in the series, which boasts shows by Sheryl Crow, Harry Connick Jr., Smokey Robinson, Grizzly Bear and more.
Yoakam’s also slated to appear at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan on July 11 as part of the center’s 2013 Summer Arts Festival. Interlochen officials were checking this morning to see whether his shooting schedule would affect their show as well.
The Meijer Gardens member pre-sale for discounted tickets to the summer series — which kicks off with B.B. King on June 3 — go on sale at 9 a.m. Saturday at Meijer Gardens (without fees) and online (with fees) at StarTickets.com. Get details online here.
