A: A heavy metal Christmas.
Headbangers of the Yuletide variety jammed into the Grand Rapids Public Museum on Sunday afternoon for the annual Tuba Christmas concert, a nationwide tradition started more than a half-century ago starring tuba and euphonium players who unleash familiar holiday tunes in low brass fashion.
With many dressed in Santa hats and festive gear, the tuba-propelled Grand Rapids concert was one of dozens upon dozens of similar performances taking place this holiday season across the United States (not to mention a few shows in Canada, Costa Rica and Australia).
“Never seen a larger low brass section,” one fan posted on Facebook after the Grand Rapids show organized by Karen Dunnam.
Added the Northview Band Boosters: “Something about those low harmonies just soothes the soul.”
Other soul-soothing shows from the week across West Michigan included Mighty Big Rig’s album-release show at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo, where Knee Deep Shag and Grace Theisen Band also performed the night before, Hot Mulligan, Tigers Jaw, You Blew It!, Riley and more at The Intersection, and the return of Lighting Matches to SpeakEZ Lounge for the Local Spins Wednesdays series.
