This week’s live music recap showcases concerts at 20 Monroe Live, Elevation, The Pyramid Scheme, Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe, SpeakEZ Lounge and the third annual Starkbierfest at Cedar Springs Brewing.
More than a decade ago, I had the misfortune of ferrying my daughter and a carload of middle-school girls across the state to Saginaw to watch heartthrob singer Chris Carrabba and Dashboard Confessional fire up a screaming throng of teens and tweens.

I say “misfortune” only because, as a dad, it was a grueling and ear-piercing 12-hour expedition filled with giggling, chattering young passengers, waiting in a long line outside the venue, suffering through a series of opening acts and sitting on a hard bleacher seat for hours as the mostly female crowd swooned through Dashboard Confessional’s set. Then, of course, there was the wearying, gossip-filled, late-night ride back home.
Interestingly, Dashboard Confessional’s first-ever appearance at Grand Rapids’ 20 Monroe Live on Friday borrowed heavily from the set list of that show lo so many years ago: At least a dozen songs came from the band’s first four albums, starting with “Age Six Racer” that opened the evening to an encore rendition of “Hands Down,” making it a nostalgic night indeed for those 20-somethings in the crowd who once cheered the band as tweens. (Check out the set list below.)
