Organizers of the Cowpie Music Festival in southern Kent County this week officially added those regional stars and more to the lineup for the Aug. 8-10 event.
Others new to the 2019 bill include Stormy Chromer, Elijah Russ & Groove Ground, Lisa Mackie, Mark Lavengood and Powell, McCoy, McFerrin.
The festival – with earlier-announced acts Cracker, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Desmond Jones, Motor City Josh, Lady Ace Boogie and others – also will soon add to the lineup the winner from its Pathway to the Pasture band contest.
The third round of that battle takes place at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Arcadia Brewing Co. in Kalamazoo, with Bay City’s Barbarossa Brothers, Grand Rapids’ Drew Phoria and Utopian Party on the bill. Admission to the dog-friendly event along the Kalamazoo River is free.
The bands are competing for a chance to join early-round winners Flexadecibel and Dalmatian Stone in the finals June 7 at Holland’s Park Theatre. (A fourth round takes place May 24 at Ziggy’s in Ypsilanti.)
Cowpie 2019 is also flaunting a “Woodstock” theme, with many acts planning to perform sets in August inspired by the legendary festival that’s celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer.
For instance, the Latin-fired Grand Rapids band Cabildo will play a Santana set, Kosmic Mama will pay homage to Janis Joplin, Elija Russ to Jimi Hendrix, Powell, McCoy, McFerrin to CSNY, The Legal Immigrants to The Who and The Bootstrap Boys, Merchant and Mackie paying tribute to various Woodstock artists.
The announcement of additional performers comes with just a few weeks left for purchase of early-bird tickets, which are $100 for the weekend. (Prices go up to $120 in June.) Get info about tickets and VIP camping online at cowpiemusicfestival.com.
