West Michigan's music scene
Traditions new and old were part of the live music lineup across West Michigan the first weekend of September.
The long-running Eastown Streetfair in Grand Rapids’ Eastown neighborhood on Saturday boasted performances by nine regional acts — including the ever-wild and animated PotatoeBabies — along with a wide array of vendors.
Kalamazoo featured multiple celebrations: Art Hop Friday and Brush The Block, with music by the Nathan Moore Affair, the Kalamashoegazer Festival with a dozen shoegaze and dream pop bands from all over the country (curated by April and Adam of Vida Eterna) on Friday and Saturday at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe, and Saturday’s annual end-of-summer block party at One Well Brewing, with Sounds of The Zoo hosting sets by last year’s Battle of the Bands winner Yellowhouse, reggae’s Zion Lion and Ann Arbor’s Pajamas.
Beyond that, another contest winner – Lowell rock band The Nuance, which won Albion’s Walk the Beat competition — performed at Old Dog Tavern in Kalamazoo, and California electronic music whiz Jauz pumped things up at The Intersection’s Elevation in Grand Rapids.
Finally, on Sunday on Grand Rapids, a new tradition of sorts continued as one of the city’s newest music venues, The Big Room, hosted its second major concert with Nashville folk-punk star Sunny War performing, along with blues singer-songwriter Buffalo Nichols.
