Blessed with sunny weather and impressive musical highlights, Kalamazoo’s Sounds of the Zoo rolled out on Saturday for a sixth day of the fifth-year festival celebrating Michigan music.
The main stage at Bronson Park boasted diverse sets by Kalamazoo Academy of Rock, Charlie Millard Band, Mexicuba, Mark Lavengood Band and West Michigan Americana fave Myron Elkins, who brought a horn section and some funky new material to engage fans.
Nearby, buskers throughout downtown added to the musical melange — a testament to the seven-day festival that wraps up today (Sunday) with more stars at Bronson Park.

Earlier in the week, Chris Canas fired up blues, Yellowhouse rocked, Desmond Jones jammed, After Hours brought electronic jazz, Brandon Fitzpatrick & The Element delivered dueling synths and keyboards, Kandace Lavender got soulful, and Santino Jones and The Experience had the crowd dancing amid old-school revelry. It was just the tip of the iceberg in a week that covered a lot of ground and lot of venues during the festival organized by Jennifer Hudson-Prenkert. Scroll down for photo galleries from Days 2-6.
That was just part of the week’s music lineup across the region, with Park Fest at Holland’s Park Theatre heating up the stage for two days in a row, the international jazz trio Biriba Union regaling fans at Kalamazoo’s Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe as part of the Connecting Chords Music Festival, followed at Bell’s by Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Hot Like Mars and Headband Henny, Brooks & Dunn going country at the next-to-last Acrisure Amphitheater concert of the season in Grand Rapids, the Wealthy Street Block Party, and GWAR bringing its scary-costume heavy metal to The Intersection, just a few days before founding member and visual artist Chuck Varga passed away from cancer at age 68.
And Cooper’s Glen Again returned with multiple performers at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
