This WGRD-sponsored show by Gojira was rescheduled from May 18, and those tickets will be honored on Tuesday. Metal compatriots Torche and Code Orange open. Find tickets online here.
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
COUSIN AVERY, PLAIN JANE GLORY
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
Based in Kalamazoo, Cousin Avery brings its own distinctive charm to the West Michigan folk-rock scene, a bluegrass-inspired vibe filled with positive and uplifting messages. Singer-guitarist Marcus Taylor says of his songs: “They’re kind of that bright little part of us that we want to let shine in those times when we’re not feeling really bright and the world isn’t looking really bright.” The band also features Colin Killmer, Ed Martini, Jeff Brant and Jason Bryant.
Opening the evening will be Muskegon duo Plain Jane Glory, a powerful, Americana-hued musical couple — Michael and Laura Boxer — who turn heads wherever they play with their fetching harmonies and bluegrass-fired magic. And take advantage of some Michigan beer specials on tap, with free parking in the lot on Monroe Avenue NW kitty-corner from SpeakEZ. Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge and WYCE.

NAPPY ROOTS
DEMUN JONES, SHOTGUN SHANE
When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $20 advance, $25 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
Backroad Records recording act The Lacs has a new single, “Jack in My Coke,” that describes the attitude of these country rapping guys, who’ve also titled their tour, “The Deplorables Tour.” Judge for yourself what that’s all about, but this show hosted by The Intersection and 107MUS also features sets by Big Smo, Nappy Roots, Demun Jones and Shotgun Shane.
The Lacs released their most recent album, “American Rebelution,” in the spring. Doors for this all-ages show open at 6:30 p.m. Get more details online at sectionlive.com, along with details about Thursday’s “OOKAY: WOW! COOL! CABILDO, EPCYA
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $8
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
It will be impossible to stay still if you’re in the audience for this show at the Tip Top on Friday. Grand Rapids’ Cabildo uncorks an astounding cumbia-enhanced attack, a Latin-flavored dance party that meshes rock, folk, cumbia, ska, and other genres into its fun music. And new Grand Rapids band EPCYA is unique, too, with an alternative rock and ska approach.
Get more details on Tip Top’s Facebook event page where you can also find details about Saturday’s return of a Michigan blues favorite: Root Doctor.
LOCAL SHOWCASE NO. 18:
LAMBO, WALA GUM
PINK SKY, MOTORKAM
When: 9:30 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $7-$10
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
Rock, rap and psychedelic alternative acts romp across the stage as Local Showcase No. 18 rules at The Pyramid Scheme at this 21+ show. Wala Gum (which just played its first show last month) has a brand new, fetching, psychedelic rock album to tout, and Detroit’s MotorKam describes his music as “hip hop, experimental electronic funk rap,” so this show covers a lot of territory.
Get $7 tickets in advance online here.
PULASKI DAYS: STAN MROZ ORCHESTRA
EDDIE BLAZONCZYK’S NEW PHASE POLKA
RODNEY BEYER POLKA PALS
GERRY KAMINSKI’S POLKA NETWORK
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Admission: Varies
Where: 14 halls in Grand Rapids
Gen. Casimir Pulaski was an important military figure in Poland and the Revolutionary War-era United States, so it’s fitting that Polish-Americans in Grand Rapids honor him with a big party on a weekend close to the 238th anniversary of his battlefield death at the tender age of 32. Certainly, he would have approved of the fine array of Polish food available at 14 halls on the West Side.
And it’s a great chance to literally kick up your heels and polka all day long, like one of those traditional three-day Polish weddings. Don’t miss the Grammy-nominated Eddie Blazonczyk and his gang at the Polish Falcons Hall. A number of DJs, cover bands and accordion specialists also will be on hand. A shuttle is available for revelers. Find details at pulaskidays.org. There’s also a Saturday parade and a Sunday Mass at the John Ball Park bandshell.

The fest also boasts sales, a beer tent, local vendors, industry vendors, samples, food and raffles, plus a local produce contest.
The event is also collecting produce donations for Feeding America. Get more information at their Facebook event page. And read more about Mark Lavengood announcing this week that he’s departing Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys online here.

Where: 1202 Bridge St. NW, Grand Rapids
Carbon Stories hosts its first on-site concert in Grand Rapids on Saturday evening, featuring Chicago-based indie-rock outfit Cardinal Harbor. The event will include refreshments, homemade waffles, a bonfire and photoshoots. Festivities will take place outside the creative agency’s studio, located on the West Side of Grand Rapids.
Tickets can be purchased online here.
THE PIXIES, MITSKI
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
Legendary rock band The Pixies brings the tour behind the group’s most recent album, “Head Carrier,” to Grand Rapids, led by Black Francis and Joey Santiago, with David Lovering and new bassist Paz Lenchantin. Opening the show will be Mitski.
That these alt-rock icons are playing Grand Rapids alone is a pretty big deal, which is one reason why only a few tickets remained for this show early in the week (though resale tickets are definitely available). Read the Local Spins interview with The Pixies later this week.
MATT FLINNER TRIO, DON JULIN, FAUXGRASS
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $15
Where: Camp Blodgett, 10451 Lakeshore Drive, West Olive
The first-ever Great Lakes Music Camp being held this weekend north of Holland brings together top-drawer acoustic instrument players for three days of workshops that will engage 40 campers for workshops and instruction.
But it also boasts an evening bluegrass-driven concert that’s open to the public, with renowned Colorado mandolinist Matt Flinner playing with his trio, plus Traverse City mandolinist Don Julin and Grand Rapids progressive bluegrass band Fauxgrass. Details, tickets online at greatlakesmusic.org. Doors open at 7 p.m.
TOMMY CASTRO & THE PAINKILLERS
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $20-$75
Where: Park Theatre, 248 S. River Ave., Holland
California soul-blues-rock singer and guitarist Tommy Castro has cultivated a loyal Michigan audience for his music and, for several years, performed regularly as part of WLAV-FM’s Blues on the Mall series. On this tour, he’s releasing his latest album, “Stompin Ground,” which AllMusic.com described as containing “swaggering, razor-wire gospel-tinged soul” and “simmering deep blues.”

CEDAR SPRINGS RED FLANNEL FESTIVAL:
HAZY PAST, TRIXY TANG
DEEP GREENS & BLUES, CROSSBOW
HANNAH ROSE & THE GRAVESTONES
When: Friday-Saturday
Admission: Free
Where: Downtown Cedar Springs
The Red Flannel Festival in Cedar Springs is as big a slice of Americana as you’ll find in West Michigan: Car show, chicken barbecue, parades, marching bands, arts & crafts fair, bingo, pancake breakfast, talent show, football and a beauty pageant.
Each evening, the bands come out to play. The Friday and Saturday lineups include popular cover bands Trixy Tang (8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Red Flannel Grand Lodge Tent) and Hazy Past (6:30 p.m. Friday in the Festival Celebration Beer Tent); alt country’s Deep Greens & Blues (9 p.m. Friday in the Festival Celebration Beer Tent); Michigan Celtic band Crossbow (6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Festival Celebration Beer Tent); and the bluesy Hannah Rose, from just down the road a piece in Rockford, with her band, The GravesTones (9 p.m. Saturday in the Festival Celebration Beer Tent). Festival Celebration Beer Tent bands are sponsored by Cedar Springs Brewing Co., in no small part a factor in Cedar Springs’ re-growth. Oh, make sure to wear red. Otherwise, you’ll liable to be “arrested” and have to pay $1 in bail money as a fund-raiser — a real bargain, BTW. A full schedule is online here.
MAY ERLEWINE ALBUM-RELEASE SHOW
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $20 advance, $25 at the door
Where: St. Cecilia Music Center, 24 Ransom Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
As the de facto queen of Michigan’s indie-folk scene with more than a dozen albums under her belt, it’s not surprising that there would be a lot of anticipation for singer-songwriter May Erlewine’s new studio project, “Mother Lion.” Not only does this respected artist call on the talents of members of Ann Arbor funkster band Vulfpeck for this album produced by Tyler Duncan, but the recording is full of songs “born from triumphant tenderness and glorious vulnerability.”
Not only that, but Michigan fans get first crack at the new album: She plays Grand Rapids Saturday and follows that with several more album-release shows across the state, including an Oct. 14 appearance at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Café in Kalamazoo and an Oct. 19 concert at the Seven Steps Up listening room in Spring Lake (plus tour stops in Ann Arbor, Cadillac, Lake Orion and East Lansing). It’s only after that that Erlewine will digitally release the album nationally. By the way, her CD-release shows boast a new band — Duncan on keyboards, Julian Allen on drums, Max Lockwood on bass, Katie Van Dusen on violin and Anand Nayak on electric guitar – for “intimate, listening room-style shows.” Get tickets and details online here.
DESMOND JONES ALBUM-RELEASE SHOW
When: 9:30 p.m. Saturday
Admission: $5
Where: Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids jam band Desmond Jones has really established itself as one of West Michigan go-to, party-styled jam bands, incorporating entertaining elements of funk, jazz and rock into its approach. It’s something that the group also showcases on its first, full-length studio album which officially gets released for Grand Rapids fans this weekend at the Founders show, with the band playing two full sets.
For a preview, listen to the Local Spins segment on Michigan Public Radio’s “Stateside” at 3 p.m. Tuesday when the new album will be featured by John Sinkevics. And tune in to Local Spins on WYCE (88.1 FM) at 11 a.m. Friday when members of Desmond Jones will be the in-studio guests, helping kick off WYCE’s Fall Fund Drive.

Sean McConnell playing Seven Steps Up in Spring Lake, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, $20-$30 – Singer-songwriter Sean McConnell returns to this vibrant listening room with what Seven Steps Up owners call “a musical religious experience,” touring behind a new self-titled Rounder album. Get tickets and details online at pindropconcerts.com.
Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd, playing at 8 p.m. Thursday at Kalamazoo State Theatre, Kalamazoo, $25-$30 — Country Music Association 2016 New Artist Of The Year and Grammy winner Maren Morris, a producer as well as a singer, lands her Hero Tour 2017 in West Michigan. Morris played last Saturday night at Sirius XM’s Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, which on the following evening became the site of the largest mass murder by gun in U.S. history. Opening is Ryan Hurd, an RCA recording artist and songwriter.
ONEFREQ playing the ArtPrize Awards Ceremony at 20 Monroe Live in downtown Grand Rapids, 7:30 p.m. Friday (and broadcast on the big screen at Rosa Parks Circle) — Of course, lots of folks mesmerized by the international ArtPrize competition are also intensely interested in who will take home $500,000 in prizes when winners are announced Friday. But there’s some musical entertainment involved, too, with Detroit’s impressive ONEFREQ serving as the house band for the hoopla at 20 Monroe Live, which is reserved for event members, volunteers, participating artists and venue managers with the public getting to watch on the big screen at Rosa Parks Circle. But the after-party at 20 Monroe Live is open to the public ($9.99 tickets) with ONEFREQ and Masego performing. Details, tickets online here.
KRIIIIN, SpaceSkull, Fogwood and Eurotrash Hitmen, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mexicains Sans Frontieres, 120 S. Division Ave., Apt. 226, $10 suggested donation — We can’t describe this show any better than MSF did on its Facebook page: “The cult of SpaceSkull tried to summon their god but the intergalactic outlaws known as KRIIIIN were conjured instead, wreaking havoc and mayhem. This time, with help of the Eurotrash Hitmen and Fogwood, SpaceSkull will break their strange and mystic link to KRIIIIN and destroy them for good!!” Well, then. Just make sure the clothes you wear to this show are washable.
Honeyhoney and Korey Dane, 8 p.m. Friday at Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake, $25-$35 — Susan Santo and Ben Jaffe of Los Angeles comprise Honeyhoney and bring a “harmony-driven brand of Southern-flavored rock & roll” to downtown Spring Lake.
The Don Stiernberg Duo with Andy and the Journeymen with Brian Oberlin, Luke Gitchell and Seth Sutton playing Crowne Plaza Hotel at 5700 28th St. SE in Grand Rapids, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, $15 suggested donation – As part of Brian Oberlin’s Great Lakes Mandolin Camp in Grand Rapids this weekend, students will be performing as well as the faculty, which includes The Don Stiernberg Duo with Andy Brown (from Chicago) and the Journeymen with Brian Oberlin, Luke Gitchell, and Seth Sutton. Attendees can enter the west side of building and go to the Thornapple Room.
Edgar Loudermilk Trio Featuring Jeff Autry, playing 2 p.m. Sunday at Zellie’s Opry House, 230 E. Edgerton St., Howard City, $10 — Having grown up around world-class bluegrass, Loudermilk is known for his bass chops. In the past few years, he has emerged as a singer with his eponymous bandmates and as a duo with Dave Atkins. BluegrassTodaycom reports that “Loudermilk has a distinctive voice in bluegrass music.” The most recent release is “Georgia Maple.” Jeff Autry on guitar and Zack Autry on mandolin.
Corn Fed Girls playing Salt of the Earth at 114 E. Main St. in Fennville, 7 p.m. Sunday, $15 – Kalamazoo’s Corn Fed Girls play Americana music with a unique twist, unfurling their songs in the cozy setting of Salt of the Earth for what promises to be an upbeat, weekend-ending show.
Hanson playing 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids, 8 p.m. Sunday, SOLD OUT – Of course, if this show wasn’t sold out, it would be anything but an Under-the-Radar Pick. Needless to say, these uber-popular pop-rock stars are garnering lots of attention for their “25th Anniversary Middle of Everywhere Tour.”
Theory of a Deadman playing The Intersection in Grand Rapids, 8 p.m. Sunday, $28 advance, $30 day of show – Theory of Deadman – with a new album, “Wake Up Call,” set for release later this month – returns to rock Grand Rapids with help from Ayron Jones. Doors for this all-ages show open at 7 p.m.
