LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
SKYKING, SILVERSTILES
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
LOCAL SPINS THURSDAY:
WATCHING FOR FOXES
When: 8 p.m. Thursday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
For the first time ever, Local Spins will host two straight nights of shows at SpeakEZ Lounge. (Watching for Foxes was forced to postpone last week’s show due to illness, so we’ve doubled the fun for this week and rescheduled the band for Thursday.)
For the regular Wednesday show, Local Spins presents Grand Haven’s Skyking, a four-piece progressive rock band that writes and performs original music with an impressive dose of musicianship. And they’re about to officially release a new studio album. Grand Rapids’ Silverstiles, meanwhile, returns with its “California country meets rust belt rock” approach – and some new material, too.
Thursday’s special rescheduled show will showcase Grand Rapids folk-rock band Watching for Foxes, which has carved out a unique space in West Michigan’s indie scene thanks to passionately rendered music that carries folk in a distinctive new, often atmospheric and haunting place. The band, fronted by singer Joey Frendo — with Geoffrey Kartes on cello and Jared Meeuwenberg on guitar — recently wrapped up work on a new studio album, “Nostalgia in America,” that will be released later this year. You can expect to hear some new material in this evening which marks the group’s return visit to SpeakEZ Lounge.
Local Spins Wednesdays (and Thursday) are presented by SpeakEZ Lounge, Local Spins, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE. As always, there are Michigan beer specials on tap, and free parking in the lot kitty-corner from SpeakEZ on Monroe Avenue NW.
JUDY COLLINS
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $55
Where: St. Cecilia Music Center, Grand Rapids
It’s impossible to under-estimate the impact that Judy Collins has had on America’s music scene the past half-century, from her essential role in the 1960s folk movement to her tributes to Stephen Sondheim to her social and political activism to authoring books and much more. And at 78, this masterful singer still regularly performs across the country, and for the second year in a row, will mount another duo tour with longtime pal and fellow musician Stephen Stills later this year.
But before that, she returns to Grand Rapids armed with engaging stories and folk, pop and rock songs as well as show tunes. Read the Local Spins interview with Collins later this week. The concert – part of St. Cecilia’s Acoustic Café Folk Series – is essentially sold out, so if you’re looking for that stray ticket, you better move quickly. Info online here.
KENYAN NYATITI SONG AND STORIES
When: 8 p.m. Thursday
Admission: Free
Where: One Trick Pony, Grand Rapids
This is a special – and different – Thursday night at One Trick Pony. Daniel O. will entertain folks gathered at the cozy venue with Kenyan Nyatiti songs and stories, joined by Kevin Bujo Jones and Carolyn Koebel on percussion and Dave Sharp on bass.

THE RAGBIRDS
WIRE IN THE WOOD

Ann Arbor’s The Ragbirds are a Founders favorite and for good reason: The band, led by Erin Zindle, churns out an intoxicating and lively blend of folk, rock and world fusion music that keeps them on the road as they continue to tour behind their most recent album, “The Threshold & The Hearth.” Another Ann Arbor outfit, the psychedelic bluegrass-hued Wire in the Wood, is also on the bill.
Founders follows this on Saturday with Connecticut funk-soul band West End Blend, $5. Details online at foundersbrewing.com.
BLUES TRAVELER
LOS COLOGNES
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $25
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
One of the original jam bands, Blues Traveler lives up to its ghostly name with a hard-driven touring schedule for its 30th anniversary, kicking it off in Boston last week. Brendan Hill (drums), Chan Kinchia (guitar), Tad Kinchia (bass), Ben Wilson (keyboards), along with frontman-singer John Popper also play a sold-out show at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit on Wednesday.
Originally out of Chicago, the five-man Los Colognes is opening for Blues Traveler on this tour and dropped a release called “The Wave” in 2017. (Heads up, Michiana: Los Colognes squeezes in a headlining show at Ignition Garage in Goshen, Ind. on Thursday.)
THE LIL SMOKIES

Tickets: $15 advance, $17 day of show
Where: Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Café, Kalamazoo
