Unseasonably cool for early August, conditions were nearly perfect to soak up live music outdoors — and even indoors — in the Grand Rapids area, ending with WLAV-FM’s big 40th Anniversary Show on Sunday.

With more than a month of summer left to embrace, the West Michigan music scene continues to heat up, even if the temperatures haven’t.

For those starting the weekend early, things kicked off with the stylish American roots delivery of Pokey LaFarge at The Pyramid Scheme on Wednesday (captured in pics by Anthony Norkus).
And things got even more hectic as the weekend approached (for those who didn’t zip down to Chicago for Lollapalooza), with three straight nights of summery entertainment at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: The Beach Boys, John Butler Trio and Grizzly Bear (with photos by Anna Sink). Plus there was The Soil & The Sun, The Giving Tree Band and Antrim Dells at Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids Soul Club at The Pyramid Scheme and the Steve Hilger Band with some special guests at Billy’s Lounge.
Finally, the weekend closed with a giant birthday celebration: the WLAV-FM (96.9) 40th Anniversary Show at Cannonsburg Ski Area with Loverboy, Mark Farner and local bands such as Three’s a Crowd (with photos by Dave Odette).
All in all, a pretty impressive start to August.
