May’s first weekend generated photos of a generous mix of live music: Cinco de Mayo, Drew Nelson, Tommy Womack, Wayland, Attack! Attack!, Wallace Collective, Chain of Lakes, Michigan Mark Depree.
Cinco de Mayo that was actually Cinco de Cuatro, the 43rd anniversary of the Kent State shootings, the opening of a new Downtown Market, folk legend Pete Seeger’s 94th birthday, a Hunger Walk to raise awareness and funds to address local and global needs, a concert unleashing video game music, and a tribute to Grand Rapids’ rock past.

An intriguing weekend, indeed.
Yes, May’s opening weekend unfurled with a sunny demeanor and a rainbow of live music: salsa, cumbia and more at the Downtown Arena District’s Cinco de Mayo celebration in downtown Grand Rapids, bracing Americana from Drew Nelson at Seven Steps Up and Tommy Womack at Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill (as well as a private house concert the night before), heavy music from Wayland and Attack! Attack! entertaining big crowds at The Intersection, local rootsy gems in a double CD-release show featuring Wallace Collective, Chain of Lakes and Strawberry Heritage at Founders Brewing Co. and Michigan Mark Depree and the Aardvark Conspiracy at One Trick Pony.
The weekend wrapped up with singer-songwriter Tylan — from folk-pop’s Girlyman — playing at Spring Lake’s Seven Steps Up (after the We Do Charity Music Extravaganza, featuring 16 legendary Grand Rapids bands from the past, uncorked an all-day show at the Wyoming Knights of Columbus Hall in a fund-raiser for the We Do Care charity aiding kids with cancer).
And last but not least, the winner of the drawing for a $25 gift certificate to HopCat — chosen from names of folks who contributed photos to Local Spins’ Weekend Photo Galleries in April — is (drum roll, please): Anthony Norkus. Congrats!
Thanks to everyone who sent in photos. Here’s April’s honor roll of contributors: Kevin Reedy, Kristine Carpenter, Terri Grannis, Katy Batdorff, Anthony Norkus, Michael Coleman, Anna Sinkevics, Brian Haik, Michael Koole, Steve Hilger, Todd VanTongeren, Adelina Kajtazovic and Tim Richards.
Remember, if you’re out and about catching concerts Thursday through Saturday, send a photo to jsinkevics@gmail.com by Sunday morning and you could be entered into May’s drawing. Just include the band name, venue and photographer. Now, carry on, all you wayward musical sons and daughters.
