As lead guitarist and singer Ben Taber sees it, Trash Hounds is thrilled to just “be part of the Grand Rapids music scene in general” as it churns out its uber-psychedelic, guitar-driven rock.
“The only thing we’re really ultra-focused on is continuing to write songs and to keep getting better at writing songs,” Taber said of one of Grand Rapids’ newest rock bands during this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE.
With two members of Trash Hounds – Taber and bassist Kevin Kitsch – also forming a key part of the Grand Rapids rock band The Legal Immigrants, this trio project with drummer Stephen Robert takes a different tack musically.
“We just knew it would be more textural,” Taber said of the group that originally grew out of basement jamming sessions with former Jesse Ray & The Carolina Catfish drummer Josh Worsham.
“I wanted to mess around with more delay and reverb and tremolo, like the old swampy stuff from the ’60s.This was just a way to try all the other things that I like about music.”
Taber, who grew up in Sutton’s Bay in northern Michigan, cites artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Crème and Blue Cheer for inspiring his musical passion.
PODCAST: Local Spins on WYCE with Trash Hounds and representatives of Radi8er
Trash Hounds just wrapped up work on their debut EP, “Ear Muzik,” which likely will be released next month. They unveiled a couple of new songs in Studio X during their appearance for Local Spins on WYCE. Listen to those songs as part of the entire podcast here.
The band will perform Saturday night at The Pyramid Scheme in a “local pop-up showcase” with fellow psych-rockers Heaters and Grand Rapids surf rock icons The Concussions. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; tickets are $8 in advance; $10 day of show. Get details online at pyramidschemebar.com.
The March 25 edition of Local Spins on WYCE also featured the debut of new tracks by Lloyd Braun, Jake Down & The Midwest Mess, CrossBow and The Zannies, plus a track by Flint Eastwood that was recorded last week at Michigan House-Austin during South by Southwest. (Editor’s Note: Due to some show reshuffling, the Flint Eastwood track comes BEFORE the new track by Lloyd Braun in the second half of the episode.)
Also on the program: music by The Concussions, Full Catastrophe and Josh Rose. Host John Sinkevics also interviewed Jim Czarew and Rob Anthony from a new music platform and app, Radi8er, about their mission to help showcase regional music and give listeners a unique way to soak in the music that a community is embracing. Read more about that next week at Local Spins.
