Call it mega-Thursday.
The evening that really launched the long Labor Day weekend was chock full of musical wonders for holiday-happy fans:
• About 6,000 fired-up fans flooded Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park on the final night of Blue Cap Entertainment’s Summer Concert Series, with Theory of a Deadman, Halestorm and Grand Rapids’ own Fled Five powering through sets for a lively crowd (as the photos by Eric Stoike below show). In all, about 22,000 people flocked to the three nights of shows, with a country lineup headlined by Craig Morgan on Tuesday and a rock roster led by the Goo Goo Dolls and Daughtry on Wednesday. (Read more about that show, with a full photo gallery, in this Local Spins review.)
• Diarrhea Planet proved their mettle as one of rock’s most wildly entertaining bands in raucous show at The Pyramid Scheme, with four guitarists cranking up a non-stop, crowd-interactive set that pumped up about 200 fans on hand. “It was insane,” says Local Spins photographer Tony Norkus. “One of the guitarists from DP even dove into the crowd at the end while playing.”
• Lake Street Dive, with the Lowdown Brass Band, delivered one of the highlights of the summer in front of 1,900 folks in a sold-out show at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Check out the Local Spins review and a full photo gallery.
• Elsewhere, Grand Rapids’ Mail Order Monsters delivered a highly unusual — and mostly light-less — chiptune CD-release show armed with vintage Commodore 64 computers at Founders Brewing Co., Celtic/world music’s An Dro played the Inner-City Christian Federation’s Thursday night summer series, singer-songwriter David Molinari played one of his favorite haunts, One Trick Pony, and Scott Pellegrom Trio and Hannah Rose & The GravesTones returned to Rockford Brewing Co.
And the new duo of Lucas Wilson and Hannaniah Whitley, aka WilsonWhitley, played the debut of the “Local Spins on WYCE” show at WYCE-FM (88.1) on Friday morning. Tune in again at 11 a.m. this Friday when Mat Churchill will the featured guest.
