West Michigan's music scene
Once again, Local Spins pulls out its virtual turntable to spin brand new tunes from West Michigan bands with upcoming EP-release shows.
First up, it’s Kalamazoo’s Red Sea Pedestrians, who’ve long impressed audiences with their diverse, world music-infused strains, tossing everything from Americana and gypsy vibes to klezmer and jazz music into their stew. As part of the band’s sixth annual Masquerade Ball at Bell’s Brewery on Friday ($8 with mask, $10 without) — with The Corn Fed Girls, Matt Gross, Wellspring Dance and The Kalamazoo Ghostbusters also performing — it will release a new 7-inch EP. It will be available via ail order and digital download through Earthworkmusic.com starting Friday.
After focusing on a host of live-performance projects, producer/musician Ian Gorman tells Local Spins that the two-song EP recorded at La Luna Recording & Sound was a chance for RSP “to get a little something out into the world.” The EP features live favorites that spotlight “different sides to the band” – the live band and experimental studio sides. Folks buying the EP, with cover artwork by Rachel Gorman, will get an MP3 download card.
Here’s the “live band vibe” track “Tied to the Wheel,” from that 7-inch project, exclusively at Local Spins.
THE RED SEA PEDESTRIANS, “TIED TO THE WHEEL”
Second, it’s Grand Rapids’ Murder Party!, whose band members joke that they “started their killing spree on Halloween 2011 and have been terrorizing steadily since then.” This Halloween, they’ll scare folks at Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, which will also host the reunion of The Necrophilicons and sets by Antilogical and Dead Eye Zack on Friday ($5).
For punk/ska/rockabilly’s Murder Party!, it also signals the official release of a split 7-inch with the band Antilogical, with a vinyl version still to come this winter. Guitarist-singer Tommy Gun tells Local Spins that the songs were recorded at Blackport Audio right here in Grand Rapids with Ryan Cunningham (Waxines, Antilogical, Sext Farm, Spinal Tap Tribute, Ginger Fig). We wanted to do a split with our friends and at the same time cram as many songs on our half as possible. So (the) two tracks on the album are actually four songs.”
And here’s one of them, er, two of them (with a parental advisory for language)…
MURDER PARTY!, “BLACK LENNY/TRIGGER HAPPY”
Tune in to Local Spins on WYCE (88.1 FM) at 11 a.m. Friday for a special Halloween “fund drive” edition of the show, with not only the on-air debut of songs by these bands, but special guest Alexis performing in studio. It’ll be a real electro-zombie-pop affair.
