Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis had hoped for a homecoming concert and now he’s got one.
The Chili Peppers will play Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena on May 26 as part of a much-hyped U.S. tour behind their latest album, “I’m With You.”

The announcement comes just nine days after the band announced that 23 dates on that tour would be postponed due to surgery on Kiedis’ foot, which he recently reinjured. The tour will now resume on March 29 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Tickets for the Grand Rapids show, $35-$55, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at the arena box office, Ticketmaster outlets, or online at ticketmaster.com or livenation.com.
The West Michigan show had long been rumored: Kiedis, a Grand Rapids native whose mother, Peggy Idema, still lives in the area, indicated to me in an interview last month that he was hoping for a Grand Rapids date, but wasn’t sure how the tour routing would fit in with available dates at the arena.
The band last played Grand Rapids in November 2006 as part of the “Stadium Arcadium” tour.
The Chili Peppers today also announced a June 1 tour stop at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, which music critic Gary Graff notes is a homecoming of sorts for the band’s drummer, Chad Smith, a Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School graduate.
