The bassist and guitarist for Grand Rapids’ Heaters and contributor to Local Spins gets psychedelic, heavy, pop-hued, garagey, surfy and nostalgic with his roster of tunes for spring and summer jamming.
EDITOR’S NOTE: As part of the celebration of Local Spins’ fourth anniversary, we’ve asked some of our writers and contributors to create Top 10 playlists of favorite tunes for spring and summer — right before the music festival season really heats up. The only caveat: At least one of the picks must be a local or regional artist.

For his list, contributor Nolan Krebs — a member of Grand Rapids psych-rock/garage-rock band Heaters — dug deep, from Black Sabbath to George Harrison and The Mystery Lights to Darkly. He also got help from Heaters drummer Josh Korf for one of his picks: Froth’s “Distant Ties.” Heaters, by the way, will play Local Spins 4th Anniversary Party at 8 p.m. May 20 at Rockford Brewing, with The Honeytones opening the special evening that will include the tapping of Local Spinsation Ale. LOCAL SPINS SPRING/SUMMER PLAYLIST BY NOLAN KREBS
1. “Supernaut,” Black Sabbath — This is my just-got-out-of-work jam. It’s so heavy – the guitar, drums, everything is so on point. Perfect for blasting with the windows down.
2. “Keep Me in Mind,” Tashaki Miyaki — I think I heard this song for the first time while I was cruising out to Lake Michigan a couple summers ago. The main hook is, “Keep me in mind, for summertime.” Pretty summery, I’d say.
3. “Distant Ties,” Froth — I asked our drummer Josh for a good summer jam, and this was his pick. This is an older cut from the band, but still a really great tune.
4. “Lou Reed,” Frankie and the Witch Fingers — This song reminds me of touring the west coast last summer. We played some California dates with our friends in this band, and this is probably our favorite track of theirs.
5. “Looking For A Fight,” Bleached — This is another song that reminds me of touring out west last year. I don’t usually go in for the bubblegum/pop-punk type sound, but Bleached rips it up.
6. “Act Like You Know Me,” Spike and The Sweet Spots — One of my favorite bands, SATSS are some really good people from Chicago. This entire album will lift you up.
7. “Western Playland,” Holy Wave — I think this is my favorite song these days. Our buds in Holy Wave put out a really great album this spring – dig it!
8. “Follow Me Home,” The Mystery Lights — Our good friends, The Mystery Lights, are releasing their debut full-length this summer. The first single, “Follow Me Home,” is a great way to get acquainted with one of New York’s best garage rock bands.
9. “Shy Guy,” Darkly (Local Pick) — I’ve been jammin’ the new Darkly tape lately! He’s got a great vibe, I’m excited to see what’s in store for this dude based in Grand Rapids.
10. “Out Of The Blue,” George Harrison — Secretly one of my favorite tracks from “All Things Must Pass,” it always puts me in a good mood.
