In what can only be described as a remarkable coincidence, two of West Michigan’s hottest, up-and-coming folk-propelled acts – Grand Rapids’ The Crane Wives and Traverse City’s The Accidentals – ended up playing New York City the same night, within spitting distance of each other.
Well, actually, about eight minutes of travel time on Thursday separated The Crane Wives at Manhattan’s Hill Country BBQ from The Accidentals, who were performing at Rockwood Music Hall.
Both bands were on East Coast tours, with The Crane Wives headed to Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh, Penn., before returning to West Michigan. The Accidentals just completed their eastern swing, making the long overnight drive back to Michigan after their New York gig to play Dearborn’s Fair Lane Folk Festival on Friday.
Despite the grueling schedule, both groups enjoyed solid turnouts for their New York shows.
“It’s been good,” bassist Ben Zito of The Crane Wives told Local Spins. “Making a lot of fans, I think.”
The Accidentals, who have been recording their new album in New York City didn’t spend any time in the studio on this trip.
“Nah, we drove through a flash flood and got here (Manhattan) at 3 p.m.,” multi-instrumentlist and singer Savannah Buist said, adding that the tour has gone well. “We had a blast. This has been a great, relaxed tour.”
