Society Kills won Saturday’s Heavyweights competition, captured in images here, but there was plenty more on this week’s docket, from Suicide Silence to The Carboys.

The theme this week: Big and heavy.
There was the Heavyweights Finals at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, with six of the region’s heaviest metal and hard rock bands duking it out on stage Saturday in front of more than 500 fans for the coveted title. Greenville’s Society Kills — Jared Kellum, Jake Vanderband, Ryan Nielsen and Joe Samson — emerged victorious at the end of the long night, outpolling Seraphim, Anchors Calling, Essentia, Infinite Design and Of All We Cherish in the annual battle of the bands sponsored by MoshPitNation and The Intersection. Society Kills thanked its fans via Facebook after the victory, noting they were “so overwhelmed by everything that happened tonight, and we are so grateful.”
Just down the street, there was Big Dudee Roo’s CD-release show at Founders Brewing Co., with several hundred happy fans turning out to not only celebrate the Grand Rapids psychedelic folk-rock band’s new “Heavy Dudee” EP, but to toast rootsy performances by The Carboys and The Fever Haze. It made for an all-around upbeat night.

The night before, Big Boss Blues delivered its big and bluesy sound from the stage at Billy’s Lounge in Eastown, with Charlie Schantz, Bill LaValley, Joe Ferguson and Eric Busch pumping up their vintage sound.
Speaking of blues, the North Mississippi Allstars and Anders Osborne brought their “N.M.O.” tour to The Intersection on Thursday, touring behind their new, soulfully bluesy album, “Freedom & Dreams,” and regaling about 400 devoted fans.
Also revving up the volume: California deathcore band Suicide Silence kicked off the week at The Intersection with a blistering show on Tuesday, and Black Fruit, The ID of Christ & Ape Not Kill Ape tore it up at Mulligan’s Pub in Eastown on Friday.
On a much lower decibel level, Troll for Trout made its return Saturday to One Trick Pony in Grand Rapids (with a bevy of musicians in the capacity crowd).
