West Michigan's music scene
Over the past two years, Heaters have crisscrossed the country, toured Europe and been widely hailed by national publications and critics as a “band on the rise” in the burgeoning psychedelic/surf/garage rock vein.
But when it came to recording their upcoming new full-length album, “Baptistina,” the trio of Nolan Krebs, Andrew Tamlyn and Joshua Korf came home to Grand Rapids – reveling in the comfortable confines of engineer Peter Fox’s Stone House Recording.
“We’re pretty proud of the songs,” said Krebs. “They’re longer, flow into each other really well and have the most intricate parts we’ve written. It’s more intense: a better representation of our live show. Less surf rock, more Hawkwind (a British space rock group).”
The 10-song LP – which will be available in green or black vinyl as well as in CD format – officially gets released Aug. 5 in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a full national tour to follow. They recently released a new single, “Centennial,” as an advance track from the new album. Listen to that here.

Before that release and tour, Heaters will unleash their fierce-yet-dreamy, reverb-laden assault for the first time ever at Rockford Brewing on Friday night to help celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Local Spins website and online magazine.
Veteran Grand Rapids rock band The Honeytones (plus special guests) will open the 8 p.m. party, which also will feature – for the second year in a row – the tapping of Local Spinsation Ale, a red IPA, in commemoration of Local Spins’ coverage of West Michigan’s music scene.
The evening also will feature giveaways of merchandise and festival tickets, the premiere of Local Spinsation Ale T-Shirts and Local Spins/Rockford Brewing beer glasses, and more.
The special anniversary event is part of a Local Spins Month tour that includes the SpeakEZ Lounge premiere of surf rock’s The Concussions on May 25, with special guests Real Lazy Genius and Aksumite also performing during that 8 p.m. show.
As part of the Local Spins celebration, Local Spinsation Ale will be on tap later this month at SpeakEZ Lounge, The Pyramid Scheme and The Intersection.
Local Spins also will be on hand in Muskegon for the first time on June 3 to continue its fourth birthday revelry at Watermark 920, with Olivia Mainville & The Aquatic Troupe and Christopher C. Cordle performing in a Red House Concert Series event for Muskegon’s official First Friday After-Party.
