With roots at Rockford High School, four of the five members of the Grand Rapids alt-rock outfit were in the Rockford group Phantom Ivory and all have performed with various bands over the years.
Indeed, formed about two years ago, The Great Indoors already has one album under its belt – recorded at Joel Ferguson’s Planet Sunday Studios – and another on the way.
“It was definitely an experiment, the whole first album,” concedes Caleb Waldvogel, lead singer and guitarist for the band, referring to 2015’s “Enjoy Yourself.”
“I think we’re definitely figuring ourselves out on the second album. We’re coming to terms with the musicians that we are and how we work together and I think it’s coming together just fine. … We know what we all want.”
The band – Waldvogel, bassist Jonah Nelson, guitarist Max Petrlich, drummer Miles Ferguson and keyboard player John Bomer –plans to release its sophomore album by late this year or early 2016.
PODCAST: Local Spins on WYCE with The Great Indoors
On Friday, Waldvogel, Nelson and Petrlich brought an acoustic version of the alternative indie-rock band to the studios of WYCE-FM for Local Spins on WYCE, performing a new tune, “Highways and Silhouettes,” and an older song, “Lakes,” on the air. Petrlich credited “incredible producer, incredible friend and mentor” Joel Ferguson of Planet Sunday Studios for helping the band hone its sound.
The band also is working out its new rehearsal and collaboration arrangements, with Waldvogel as a senior at Rockford High School, Bomer attending Alma College and the other three band members enrolled at Grand Rapids Community College.
“It’s still new to us,” Waldvogel said of the challenges in getting the band together these days.
“We’re definitely going to make it work. We all know that we’re dedicated enough and this is what we want to do.”
