West Michigan's music scene
Wedged between the joy of Christmas and the revelry of New Year’s Eve, West Michigan’s weekend of live music offered up the usual blizzard of diversity: the electronic ingenuity of SoundIsRed at The Pyramid Scheme (with The Twin Cats and Jahman Brahman also on the bill), the dance-inspiring jazz standards of Mary Rademacher and Mark Kahny at the SpeakEZ Lounge, the wall-rattling metal of Detroit’s Wilson at the grand opening of The Stache inside The Intersection, the string-driven folk of the Karisa Wilson String Ensemble (along with Nicholas James & the Bandwagon and The Northern Skies) at Founders, the rollicking display of ska’s Mustard Plug and friends during their annual holiday romp at The Intersection, even the one-man Christmas strains of keyboard player David Zadvinskis at the Latvian Hall.
Brant Satala, Chris Andrus, John Neil and a bevy of musicians also toasted the new year early on Saturday at Troll for Trout and Mackinaw Harvest Music frontman Michael “Colonel” Crittenden’s annual Tiki Boys’ Night affair, complete with a bonfire, cigars and, uh, a brew or two.
