The third week in May revved up with Ryley Walker, the return of Nathan Kalish & The Lastcallers, Buses by the Beach and the Local Spins Third Anniversary Celebration at Rockford Brewing with Devin & The Dead Frets, who also appeared on the 39th edition of Local Spins on WYCE. Any number of West Michigan acts could carry that “up-and-coming” label.

When it comes to the rock scene, Grand Rapids’ Devin & The Dead Frets certainly fall into that category, with a growing reputation for genre-shifting, sweat-drenched rock shows and growing fan anticipation for a new studio album that could be released by late summer or early fall.
“Our attitude is sincere and slightly pissed off. We’re just trying to play music that people get emotions evoked by,” guitarist and singer Devin Weber said during the most recent episode of Local Spins on WYCE (88.1 FM).
“We feed off of the crowd. We want to have energetic shows where everybody has a lot of fun and just feels the urge to dance and hopefully can’t help but not. … There’s a certain pop element too, but we try not to have too much. We like to say we’re a guitar band.”
The band — Weber, Jordan Kerbyson, Eric Batenburg and Zach Nelson — proved that definitively not only in WYCE’s Studio X on Friday morning when it played a couple of brand new songs, but again late Friday night when it headlined the packed Local Spins Third Anniversary show at Rockford Brewing. The Honeytones opened the evening, which also included the tapping of the first-ever Local Spinsation Ale.
