Last year, John Legend and The Roots appropriately won a Grammy Award for best R&B song for “Shine,” a masterful slice of soul with an uplifting, inspiring message.
I’m not sure there’s anything quite like that in this year’s crop of nominees for best R&B song.

But there are some intriguing choices nonetheless, so I’m betting it’ll be a real horse race for the 2012 Grammy, which gets doled out on Sunday.
So, on Day 3 of my Grammy Awards category spotlight, here are the nominees for best R&B song with videos of performances of the nominated songs.
(See yesterday’s spotlight on folk nominees by clicking here.)
— Marsha Ambrocius, Far Away – As talented as Ambrocius might be as a singer, this tune gets obscured by production flaws that plague too many modern R&B songs: programmed beats, generic backing vocals, obligatory strings.
— Cee Lo Green (with Melanie Fiona), Fool For You – As usual, Cee Lo simply stands out from the rest of the pack, vocally, stylistically and in writing approach.
— Kelly Price, Not My Daddy – Yes, this is a songwriting award. But see Ambrocius above.
— Ledisi, Pieces Of Me – A song distinguished by Ledisi’s crisp voice and delivery, with a solid arrangement.
— Charlie Wilson, You Are – Speaking of standing out, Wilson has a truly singular, captivating voice, which boosts this song into contention.
My pick: Fool for You
