West Michigan's music scene
First up, psych-grunge-folk-rock’s Big Dudee Roo teamed up the first time ever with Grand Rapids hip hop artist Rick Chyme to deliver a truly epic rendition of the band’s song, “Turn of Time,” from its most recent EP during a live on-air performance. Studio X at WYCE (88.1 FM) never sizzled better than it did during that extended nine-minute version of the song, with some brilliantly groovy guitar work and rhymes developed this week by Chyme just for the occasion.
Chyme followed that by bringing in special guest, singer Molly Bouwsma-Schultz, to accompany him on a song in Studio X, creating an entirely different, soulful-yet-intense mood.
And finally, Bouwsma-Schultz and her husband, Scott Schultz, both from the band Vox Vidorra, finished things up with pared-back versions of two songs from the group’s recently released album, “Promise Land.”
It was all part of a record-setting day for WYCE, with in-studio appearances all day long by bands participating in its online house concert auctions. Ten bands offered up their services and by the end of the bidding on Friday, the auction had raised more than $4,000 for the community radio station with Traverse City’s The Accidentals attracting the most attention (more than 20 bids) and the largest bid ($1,000).
