Scrappy. Eclectic. Raucous. Fun.
Bermudas encompass all that and more with their take on rock, a quality that winds its way through the Grand Rapids trio’s new EP, “Sour.”
Guitarist and lead singer Dennielle Russ, bassist Charity Klein Lytle and drummer Chris Kleinman approach every new song without any genre-restrictive boundaries on their take on rock.
“If it fits us and what we’re feeling, then we’ll just do it,” said Klein Lytle. “We want to do what we want to do and make music for ourselves. That’s where it kind of goes.”
Initially formed by Russ and Lytle in 2010 after a Craigslist “seeking musician” ad, Bermudas released a five-song EP, “Visit,” in 2013.
Kleinman joined the band about a year ago, and over the winter, the group recorded its second five-song EP, “Sour,” with engineer Pat Wieland (Lazy Genius). Matt Ten Clay of Amber Lit Audio mastered the project.
“A lot of ideas are bounced around the triangle here,” Kleinman said of creating the band’s music. “We really have a good chemistry.”
PODCAST: Local Spins on WYCE with Bermudas
The EP – inspired by personal experiences and self-reflection with an overriding theme of having the courage to follow your instincts – officially gets released Friday night at Long Road Distillers as part of a dual-release show with Grand Rapids rock band Flushed, which is unveiling a new full-length album. Detroit’s Best Exes will open the show at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
The evening hosted by Hot Capicola Records will also feature musicians Ryan K. Wilson and Sam Kenny joining Bermudas on stage.
The night promises to be fun in other ways: The first 50 guests at tonight’s show can help themselves to a free artisanal fortune cookie from That’s Unfortunate – cookies that contain fortunes indicating whether fans have won swag from the Bermudas, including buttons, stickers, T-shirts and cassettes. Oh, and there will be a photo booth and a piñata to smash at some point, too. Details online here.
The April 8 edition of Local Spins on WYCE also featured the debut of new tracks by Channing & Quinn, Jeremy Ensley, Barbarossa Brothers and Nathan Kalish & The Lastcallers as well as music from The Accidentals, The Soul Syndicate, Cosmonaut (this week’s musicians’ pick), The Bootstrap Boys and Troll for Trout.
