It was a day to celebrate summer … about two weeks early.
With the mercury in the upper 80s and the sun broiling West Michigan, it was also a day to savor local musicians and artists, from the Avenue of the Arts on Division Avenue to the Local First Street Party in Grand Rapids to Rockford’s Start of Summer Celebration.

Artists ranging from Detroit blues-meister Larry McCray to Grand Rapids’ alt-rock outfit Bearcat to Kalamazoo country band The Bronk Bros. were heating up — and sweating their way through — sizzling sets on Saturday.
Of course, that’s just the beginning around here, with regular outdoor concerts like Blues on the Mall, the Rogue River Blues Series and more kicking off this week, now that schools have unshackled their flocks and folks are looking for ways, as The Beatles proclaimed, to “follow the sun.”
